What are Sector-Based Exchange Traded Funds?
These are Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) that have as their underlying tracking instrument an index or other financial product focused on a single market sector. These may be made up of stocks with the same or similar Standard Industrial Codes (SIC). Because they are composed of stocks within the same market segment, they may be more volatile than broad-based ETFs that usually span multiple market sectors.
Why Investors Care
Investors choose sector-based ETFs when they believe a particular sector or industry is going to perform better over a period of time that some others. This gives them a way to participate in that sector growth without having to choose the individual stocks that may be the winners. As with other ETFs, the overall investment can be much smaller than required to purchase all of the stocks separately, yet achieve the same result.
